Visual Warning Equipment - LED, Strobe and HalogenAutomotive visual warning technology has advanced dramatically over the past twenty years and the pace of change continues to gather momentum. Historically, the rotating halogen beacon provided the only means of warning. Woodway Engineering introduced Whelen strobe systems into the UK in the early 1980’s and gained a loyal following with many emergency services. Strobe lighting provided reliability, flexibility of operation, low power consumption and greater visual warning presence compared to halogen equivalents. In the late 1990’s Woodway exhibited the first LED directional light heads in red, blue and amber at the TRAFFEX exhibition. At the time, especially in blue, they appeared expensive and the light output and viewing angles were limited. However, unknown to many there were already samples of generation II LED’s in existence and talk of generation III. Woodway with an eye to the future realised the potential for LED’s in emergency visual warning equipment. By investment in the design of the optics and the use of generation IV LED’s, LED light intensity and viewing angles now rivals that of strobe. Combine this with low power draw, flexibility, multiple flash patterns, low maintenance, long life expectancy (100,000 hrs plus, 5 year warranty) and no high voltages, LED lighting is becoming the preferred choice for Emergency Services.
